About Lucan

Lucan sits on the River Liffey, where the River Griffeen flows into it, with Griffeen Valley Park running along the Griffeen through the town. On 6 November 2000 the Griffeen broke its banks at the northern end of Griffeen Valley Park and flooded Lucan village, with South Dublin County Council's report recording 25 flooded houses at Old Forge, 18 at Grange Manor Park and Drive, and Adamstown Road closed for several days. After that event, South Dublin County Council carried out flood alleviation works in Lucan village and through Griffeen Valley Park: widening and deepening the river channel, adding new culverts and bridges, lowering weirs and raising walls, with the works completed in 2004. Lucan is administered mainly by South Dublin County Council, though the north Lucan areas of Laraghcon, Coldblow and Saint Catherine's Park fall under Fingal.

The Griffeen, the Liffey and Local Wastewater Works

The River Griffeen rises near Saggart Hill, draining a catchment of almost 44 square kilometres before joining the Liffey at Lucan. Below the N4 the Griffeen runs past Vesey Park and Adamstown Road, and the Adamstown Road stretch runs in a modified course with concrete walls built to hold back flood water. South Dublin County Council reported in June 2021 that it knew of one minor flood in the Griffeen catchment in the previous five years, on riverside paths in Griffeen Park, with no property damage.

Uisce Éireann's Tobermaclugg pumping station upgrade on Tubber Lane began in late October 2025 and was listed as in progress as of October 2026, with completion due by end of 2026. The upgrade adds capacity for about 14,000 possible new homes in Lucan and Adamstown.

Lucan's population grew rapidly, from 4,245 in 1971 to 12,451 by 1976, and the urban area recorded 57,550 people at the 2022 census. Areas of Lucan include Lucan village, Adamstown, Finnstown, Esker, Sarsfield Park, Old Rectory, Griffeen Valley Park, and, in north Lucan, Laraghcon, Coldblow and Saint Catherine's Park.

Drain Responsibility and Repair Grants

Uisce Éireann's published position is that it has sole responsibility for the public sewer network, but the property owner is responsible for the private pipework running from the property all the way to where it meets the public sewer main, including any length outside the property boundary. Where several properties drain into one shared pipe, Uisce Éireann's position is that all properties contributing to the flow share responsibility for a blockage in that shared section. To report a blockage or sewer flooding on the public side, the number for Uisce Éireann is 1800 278 278.

If a domestic wastewater treatment system in Lucan has failed a local authority inspection, a grant of 85% of costs up to a maximum of €12,000 may be available to repair, upgrade or replace it. The grant does not cover routine maintenance, servicing or de-sludging, and applications are made to and administered by the local authority's rural water section.
