Drainage & Plumbing in Leixlip
Leixlip is where the Rye Water joins the River Liffey, and the Royal Canal runs through the town. The OPW's flood study identifies Leixlip as having a long history of flooding events, and in a 1-in-100-year flood the Rye Water overflows its banks in two areas because the channel is too small. A completed flood relief scheme on the Rye Water protected 50 properties, and a further Leixlip scheme covering 63 properties is listed at the commencement stage. A CCTV drain survey uses a small waterproof camera to find blockages, cracks, tree root damage or collapsed pipes from inside the drain, without digging.
Dylex Drains & Plumbing is based in Lucan, and Leixlip is one of the areas we cover. We also cover Lucan, Celbridge, and Dunboyne, which are among the nearest towns to Leixlip. On emergency calls, our aim is to be with you within two hours of your call, any day of the year.
Leixlip's Rivers, Flood Relief and Wastewater
Uisce Éireann has completed a €23.3 million upgrade of the Leixlip Wastewater Treatment Plant, raising its capacity from 80,000 to 150,000 population equivalent. A new 8.9 km pipeline now carries Maynooth's wastewater to Confey in Leixlip for treatment at the upgraded plant. Leixlip falls mainly within Kildare County Council's administrative area, with South Dublin County Council covering outlying parts of the town.
For non-emergency work, same-day attendance is our aim on drain repairs and maintenance. Call 01 912 8882 or book online to get started.

Leixlip's History and Drain Responsibility
Leixlip has a population of 16,733 according to the 2022 census, making it the fifth largest town in Kildare. The town has two railway stations: Louisa Bridge, which opened in 1848, and Confey, which opened in 1990. Arthur Guinness ran a brewery in Leixlip in 1756 before moving to St James's Gate in 1759, and the central part of Leixlip Castle dates from 1172.
Uisce Éireann maintains the public sewer network in Leixlip; as a property owner, you are responsible for the internal plumbing and the private pipework running from your property all the way to the sewer main, including the run outside your boundary. Where several properties drain into one shared pipe, Uisce Éireann's position is that all properties contributing to the flow share responsibility for a blockage in that section. If you think a blockage is on the public side of the sewer, you can report it to Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278, and their published expectation is to deal with public sewer flooding generally within 24 hours of it being reported.
Domestic Wastewater Treatment Grants
If your domestic wastewater treatment system has failed a local authority inspection, a grant of 85% of costs, up to a maximum of €12,000, may be available to repair, upgrade or replace it. Eligibility routes include a failed inspection under the National Inspection Plan, a Priority Area for Action under the River Basin Management Plan 2022–2027, or a High Status Objective Catchment Area. The grant does not cover routine maintenance, servicing or de-sludging, and applications are made to and administered by the local authority's rural water section. The house must be permanently occupied, must have been built at least seven years ago, and must not have received a DWWTS grant in the previous seven years.
